Originally from the Saddle Lake First Nation in Alberta, Canada, Randy Wood now makes his home in St. George Utah with his wife and two kids. He is known across pow-wow country as a respected pow-wow singer, and grass dancer. For the last several years, Randy has created a new style of singing that has earned him listeners across the globe. His first solo recording “Round dance the night away” was nominated for a 2002 GRAMMY award. His third recording “Round dance blues” won Best Traditional album at the 2005 Native American Music Awards. “Our love will never die” was also nominated for a Grammy in 2006
Randy Wood is one of the founding members of the Northern Cree drum. Mr. Wood’s round dance solo melodies are described as romantic lullabies, and songs of everlasting love and intimate vocals, as he sway to the gentle beat of his drum, leading the listener on a journey of love through the heart and soul.
Randy Wood could be called a Native American Elvis of his own time. He sings romantic lullabies to his wife, family members, objects in his life, (his car on one of his CDs) and his heritage. He sings the stuff of pop songs, but also he jokes about Indian braids, "That's Why We Have braids." However, he doesn't sing these love songs over guitar, bass, drum or synthesizer which might be the pop standard of our time. His melodies can be heard over the soothing heartbeat of his Native American drum.
